Technology

MSAR® technology is built on a unique combination of proprietary equipment, additive formulation know-how & unparalleled emulsion fuel experience.

OIW emulsion fuels are an established and proven option in power generation applications, with more than 60 million tons of Orimulsion® used by a global reference list of major utility companies including in Europe, the Americas and Asia for base load power generation.

MSAR® technology builds on this experience, as a later generation fuel, and has been developed alongside major companies such as Maersk, Cepsa, GE Alstom, Wärtsilä & MAN. Residues from VDU through to SDA units (1,000 – 100,000,000 cSt @ 100°C) can be emulsified.

IP & additives are supplied exclusively by Quadrise and Nouryon (AkzoNobel), with whom there is an ongoing JDA. The Quadrise Research Facility (QRF) has the capability to test and produce emulsion fuels from laboratory to industrial scale and carries out RDI activities to support projects, enhance fuel formulations, optimise process economics and enable provision of process related guarantees.

Equipment

Quadrise designs not only the primary MSAR® process units but also the overall MSAR® facility for integration into a refinery or to operate as a stand-alone facility.

The design, including chemical formulation, takes into consideration feedstocks, ambient conditions, utilities, supply chain logistics & end-user fuel specifications to create a process system that is robust for actual commercial operations.

The MSAR® Manufacturing Unit (MMU) is based on proven asphalt emulsion systems but is modified to the Quadrise design to ensure it is fit for purpose, i.e.;

  • Hardware modifications ensure equipment can be easily integrated in to existing plant and that it is compatible with required standards, e.g. ATEX.
  • Software modifications such as advanced control schemes, to ensure the unit is robust to upstream variations.

The Polymer Blending & Support Unit is a proprietary Quadrise design, based on the same standards and methodology as the MMU.

Depending on project scope, Quadrise can design, specify, fabricate and/or supply other ancillary equipment and validate existing infrastructure and procedures for emulsion fuel service, which is non-Newtonian. Project scope can also extend to cover MSAR® end-user facilities in Power, Marine, Upstream or other applications.

EPC & Project Management

Quadrise can take ownership through all phases of the project lifecycle; Scoping, Engineering, Implementation and Operations. This offers a streamlined process, eliminating the need for the “hand-offs” and the associated documents and reviews that otherwise take place between the various parties involved, thereby saving time and cost and “Fast tracking” the project.

Units can be installed in significantly less than 12 months, as illustrated.

Activities include; Scoping, Pilot Plant testing, FEED, PFD & P&ID reviews, Detailed Design, Civils, E&I, Value Engineering, Risk Management, Hazop, HSE, Permitting, Procurement, Construction & Integration Management, Commissioning, Operations & Technical Service, Fuel Logistics and Quality Assurance, including vessel guidelines and end-user procedures (Quality Control Plan).

Operations & Quality Control

Quadrise is an operator and a licensor and therefore has intimate knowledge of MSAR® fuel production, which is complemented by experience of combustion of the fuel in applications ranging from base load power production to marine.

Following on from commissioning of the MSAR® facility, Quadrise can either operate the facility or support the Licensee in doing so, with unit monitoring, troubleshooting and optimization carried out on site and remotely.

MSAR® Blendmaster Services, incorporating; residue sampling and MSAR® formulation optimisation to match actual and planned refinery process conditions and crude slate, blend forecasting, residue optimisation, quality giveaway reduction and forecast vs actual reconciliation. The QRF database covers multiple crudes, residues and MSAR® data sets.

MSAR® Supply Chain Quality Assurance Programme; including sampling protocols (refinery, vessel & power station systems), laboratory equipment training and fuel quality monitoring covering fuel specs, including; viscosity, Sulphur, metals, Al&Si, droplet size distribution, dynamic and static stability.

Business to business

Quadrise’s expertise and technical credibility allows it to operate effectively at the interfaces between supplier and consumer, whilst understanding the requirements, constraints and drivers of all stakeholders.

Many of the QFI team were previously responsible for commercialising BP and PDVSA’s Orimulsion® business and along with downstream specialists from oil companies, power utilities and marine, the team have been involved in various other MSAR® projects and trials.

Quadrise’s unique abilities and flexible business models allow it to take ownership and responsibility across the entire project and supply chain, with intimate knowledge of the technical and commercial aspects from production to consumption.
