MSAR® technology and fuel can be used in a variety of sectors in the production and use of heavy crude and fuel oils.
MSAR® fuel is suitable for base-load utility generation applications, where fuel oil or crude oil is currently utilised, based on c.60 million tons of relevant commercial emulsion fuel experience.
MSAR® fuel has been utilised in a variety of boilers (50MWth – 770MWe) and low/medium speed diesels engines, including a 600MWe utility equipped with GE Alstom exhaust gas cleaning systems.
MSAR® is attractive as a lower cost fuel alternative, that can reduce emissions of NOx, particulate matter (especially black soot) and ash. MSAR® can reduce environmental compliance costs and enhance the profitability of existing assets or new investments.

MSAR® fuel can be considered as a low cost, low-NOx bunker fuel for 4-stroke and 2-stroke diesel engines, and marine boilers. The fuel, typically supplied directly from refineries, is delivered to vessels using conventional bunker fuel supply infrastructure and barges.
For 4-stroke engines, there is over 150,000 hours of base-load experience using V32 and V46 Wärtsilä engines on Orimulsion®, the forerunner to MSAR®. MSAR® has been tested by Wärtsilä in Finland, with improved performance demonstrated vs Orimulsion®.
For 2-stroke engines, Quadrise has developed Marine MSAR® in conjunction with a major container shipping company and the main engine OEMs Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel & Turbo. The fuel has been successfully tested on stationary 2S engines in MES Japan and WinGD Switzerland and then on operating container vessel tests to demonstrate proof of concept. Subsequently, a commercial trial was completed on a 52,000DWT vessel on the main 68MWe engine, resulting in an interim LONO for MSAR® on Wärtsilä RT-flex 96 engines.

MSAR®’s Upstream Applicability
Quadrise has experts in upstream and heavy oil operations through both its Orimulsion® heritage and experience in the North Sea, Canada and Venezuela.
MSAR® technology is applicable for all heavy and/or acidic crudes and the emulsification of crude is like that for emulsifying refinery residues, with similarities being;
- The core process equipment is the same, i.e. simple, low CAPEX, modular and compact.
- The engineering and installation of an MSAR® system for upstream applications is similar to that for downstream refining; for further information on the steps involved please see the MSAR® Installation Case Study; Cepsa Refinery.
- The emulsification chemistry is comparable and makes use of similar surfactants and formulations to produce a highly stable fuel.
- The resultant MSAR® fuel viscosity is independent of heavy crude / bitumen feed, and can be controlled to meet the end user requirements or pipeline constraints as required, e.g. <300cSt at ambient conditions.
- Fuel stability can be adjusted as required through control of the formulation to ensure the fuel is fit for purpose, whilst optimising formulation costs.
MSAR® for upstream fuel for steam/CO2 production
Where diluents or HFO are required for steam or CO2 generation for upstream production, such as steam assisted gravity drainage, or SAGD, it is worth evaluating the economics MSAR®. The MSAR® option, i.e. emulsification, may prove advantageous over the conventional use of diluents as MSAR® fuel is manufactured instead with water and proprietary chemicals to produce a comparable fuel oil without oil-based diluents.
Additionally, where MSAR® fuel is being produced for upstream applications there are sometimes complementary supply fuel supply options for local power producers / HFO consumers.
MSAR® and upstream field upgrading
Where field upgrading options such as splitters are used, or being considered, it is worth noting that MSAR® technology can be used on the low value, heavy and viscous splitter bottoms.
Figure 1 provides an example of a “Crude Topping + MSAR®” Scheme for a heavy crude oil application;
Crude is dewatered and then a proportion is fed to a Splitter installed at the central gathering station, which produces a lighter “overhead” stream and residual “bottoms”.
The bottoms are then blended to low cost MSAR® for use in steam boilers (e.g. SAGD), with additional MSAR® potentially available to supply local power generation according to demand.
The lighter splitter overheads are blended into the remaining crude, to produce a syncrude with reduced viscosity to minimise pipeline costs, and improved specifications to enhance export value.
MSAR® as a transport solution for stranded assets
Where upstream crude oil extraction results in a viscous or high-pour point heavy crude oil that requires a diluent in the field to meet pipeline or end-user specifications for lower viscosity or pour point, MSAR® technology can be considered as a low-cost modular alternative to blending.
In these applications MSAR® technology is deployed to reduce the viscosity of the crude and thereby achieve the key objective of saving diluents and/or avoiding the requirement for a heated pipeline.
This concept was successfully tested and evaluated by BP in Wolf Lake, Alberta, Canada as part of the Transoil Project. See Figure 3 below.
