Quadrise International Limited (QIL) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of QFI through which the MSAR® emulsion fuel oil business is managed. The QIL team of specialists have extensive experience in commercialising oil-in-water emulsion fuels (including Orimulsion®), and downstream and utility projects that is unmatched at a global level.
The purpose of MSAR® technology is not only to render heavy hydrocarbons easier to use by producing a low viscosity fuel oil using water instead of expensive oil-based diluents, but also to produce a superior fuel with enhanced combustion features. MSAR® technology is a game-changer for oil refiners as it frees up valuable distillates traditionally used for HFO manufacture, providing a viable alternative process for handling the bottom of the crude oil barrel without significant expenditure – thereby increasing profitability.
Oil-in-water emulsion fuels...
Oil-in-water emulsion fuels provide an alternative means of utilising heavy hydrocarbons as a fuel for energy production. The conventional alternative to emulsification is dilution with lighter, expensive oil-based diluents. Oil-in-water emulsion fuels utilise water as the diluent, providing the user with many potential benefits both in terms of price and performance.
Much work has been done developing technologies to produce heavy hydrocarbon based emulsions within the oil and fuel markets. However, it has only been within the last 20 years that the extensive use of emulsified fuels has been accepted as an alternative fuel option. A significant advancement was the commercialisation of a natural bitumen-based emulsion fuel that was jointly developed between BP and PDVSA specialists (some of whom now work for QIL). More than 60 million tonnes of the resulting fuel Orimulsion® was used by major utilities worldwide until 2006.
QIL, in conjunction with AkzoNobel, have further developed the concept and availability of commercial emulsion fuels for energy production with the development of the MSAR® fuel system.
