Advantages of MSAR® versus HFO?

Diagram - MSAR Applications

MSAR® has several advantages over conventional fuel oil some of which are environmental, whereby MSAR® yields a “green dividend”.  These advantages include:

For producers:

(e.g. oil refineries, upstream upgraders etc)

  • An increased yield of high value distillate products, reducing fuel oil production
  • Increased margin potential for the residue = higher profitability
  • Simple, low capex, economic residue disposal option, the alternative being a complex refinery upgrade (resulting in more energy intensive refining processes, with significant environmental impact and potentially prohibitive capital costs)
  • MSAR® can utilise refinery waste streams (e.g. oily or sour water)

For consumers:

(e.g. thermal plants, diesel engines for power and marine, cement plants etc)

  • NOX Levels: Circa 20% or higher reductions in NOx production (reducing smog & health risks)
  • Black Soot: Efficient carbon burn-out yields negligible “black soot” potentially reducing dust emissions
  • MSAR® cost savings versus fuel oil can increase the competitiveness and/or subsidise the capital cost of upgrading existing assets to meet current and future emissions standards – a significant capex and environmental saving versus upgrading refineries to produce low sulphur fuels

For producers and consumers:

  • Lower energy consumption because MSAR® is stored and transported at a lower temperature (fuel oil needs to be heated to higher temperatures for viscosity control)
